How to use SketchUp in your images to help bring your imagination to life. Question asked from the lovely Creatively Squared

Tell us a bit about yourself and your [architectural] background.

Hello, my name is Farah. I’m a wife and a mother to our 2 year old son, Heston. Since maternity leave ended, I’ve gone back to full time “Architecturing” hehe

Tell us a little bit about your creative process and how you came to create such beautiful and unique images.

It really started during my mat leave. I started blogging, which eventually led to my creative side coming out. I found my niche to be a combination of both mom blog/thoughts and fun whimsical composites.

My process is unique. Sometimes it’s random thoughts I want to bring forward; a topic that I convert visually. Then there are times when I get inspired by other artists and create my own perspective on it.

How does using a 3D modelling program such as SketchUp help in your creative process.

[EG. Do you model the whole scene then layer upon this in photoshop or do you create certain elements to bring into your images or a bit of both?]

Not sure if a lot of people are familiar with Sketchup*, it is a 3D modelling program that i was introduced to in Architecture school years ago. There are a lot of different 3D programs out there but I found Sketchup to be super user friendly. I think it was a game changer for me when I discovered 3D Warehouse. If you want to know more about it, see link HERE and image below.

See the red circle? that's how you get into 3d warehouse from sketchup

With modelling, I use it in two ways: creating spaces that I’m not able to physically visit (whether real or not) and then there are times I need a specific object I don’t have so having access to 3D objects help me achieve that quickly. I’ve also used it to better a location, such as recreating my room due to terrible lighting! Here are a few examples of how I used Sketchup in my composites.

Dancing in the Rain - I wanted to create my own elevation in the background
I created enough of the background on Sketchup to get my view - I can control material texture + lighting
I needed a specific angle for the rocks
I found a rock that I resized and duplicated. Lily Pad and a plane set the water
I recreated my room, everything except Heston, myself and a few textures were all done on Sketchup.
This helped get the lighting I wanted
An element that I wanted - the Green House
Sketchup helped create the perspective that could fit well with the composite

I have known and used Sketchup for years architecturally but it wasn’t until recently that I thought of combining it with my composites. A big thank you goes to 3D warehouse. I love how efficient it makes my work and able to play w/ new worlds.

You can find my work HERE on my Instagram. Give me a follow if you read this.

*Sketchup: is an intuitive 3D modeling application that lets you create and edit 2D and 3D models with a patented “Push and Pull” method. The Push and Pull tool allows designers to extrude any flat surface into 3D shapes. All you have to do is click an object and then start pulling it until you like what you see.
SketchUp is a program used for a wide range of 3D modeling projects like architectural, interior design, landscape architecture, and video game design, to name a few of its uses.
