mirror duster coat

It’s wedding season and having the privilege of being a bridesmaid, who requested we wear all silver; I wanted a unique piece for myself that would stand out. Browsing around, I just wasn’t inspired. I came across a blingy duster coat from ManiJassal – and boom, I had to have it.

HERE is the coat I was heavily inspired by, if you haven’t heard of Mani Jassal, check her out! She’s incredibly talented and a Rye Alumni. Woot woot.

She’s uber talented but I just didn’t have the budget for her piece, so if you have the time and patience, this is something you can create on your own.

In order to save cost, I reached out to @moderndayrani who also happens to be my friend for a custom net duster coat and shisha mirrors that I would glue myself (save cost), once shipped.

Here are the supplies I needed to create my mirror embellished duster coat:

  • net duster coat through @moderndayrani
  • shisha mirrors – I chose diamonds and circles
  • Aleene’s jewel-it embellishing glue from HERE
  • metal beads in silver from HERE
  • cardboard template to help space out the mirrors evenly
  • patience hehe

Steps:

  1. Use cardstock or any stiff paper to create a template that space out your shisha mirrors evenly*. I spaced mine roughly 2-2.5”
  2. Lay your fabric down flat over sheets of wax or parchment paper (prevents glue to seep through your furniture)
  3. Place the template underneath (this only works if your fabric is transparent). If it is solid, you can mark directly on the fabric, just be extra mindful.
  4. Glue your shisha mirrors using fabric glue (I used Aleene’s Jewel-It). You won’t need very much and the great thing is, it dries clear
  5. Once all the mirrors are glued and dried, cut metal beads to fit around your shisha mirrors* (because I had two different shapes, I had two different lengths of cuts)
  6. Glue metal beads w/ the same glue around each shisha mirror for the completed look

Tips:

*Because my jacket was pre-made, I had to consider how it would look when wearing it. So I separated components: back, two fronts and sleeves. The bottom of my coat flared out, so I had to gently space out my shisha mirrors further apart.

*traditionally shisha mirrors are sewn onto the fabric, but because I’m not an experienced sewer and lack of time, I chose to glue my mirrors and finish the borders with metal bead strings.

Here are a few photos from the Reception. Hope this inspires you to create and embellish everything. Seeing how great this turned out, I want to create a dupatta!
